Buy a Gun Online in Arizona: FFL Transfer Guide

Arizona has no permit to purchase, no firearm registration and no state waiting period. That shapes how an online order works here. Tucson Arms ships firearms to a licensed dealer you choose in Arizona, and that dealer completes the transfer with you. This guide explains the process, the Arizona rules that apply, and the questions buyers ask most often.

How ordering online and shipping to a local dealer works

You place the order on this site and pick a licensed dealer near you at checkout. Every firearm ships to that dealer, not to your home. When the firearm arrives, you go to the dealer to collect it. At pickup you show photo ID, fill out ATF Form 4473, and the dealer runs a federal NICS background check before handing the firearm over. Ammunition, optics and most parts ship straight to your door, and no permit or FFL transfer is needed for them.

The buying rules differ a little by product. Handguns are picked up at a licensed dealer after a NICS check, with no permit and no waiting period, and federal law sets the dealer minimum age at 21. Rifles and shotguns are picked up the same way, and dealers sell them from age 18.

Before you order, call the dealer and confirm they accept transfers from outside sources and what they charge for the transfer. Each dealer sets its own fee and rules, so ask about them directly.

What the Arizona rules say

Arizona adds no card, no local permission slip and no state check on a private sale between residents. Federal law sets the dealer minimum at 18 for rifles and shotguns and 21 for handguns. Selling or transferring a firearm to a prohibited possessor is a crime under A.R.S. 13-3102.

Carry is covered by a separate set of rules. Arizona has been a permitless carry state since 2010. Anyone 21 or older who may legally have a firearm can carry it concealed or openly, with no license and no class. Under 21, carrying concealed is still an offense under A.R.S. 13-3102, so younger adults carry openly or keep the gun cased in a vehicle. The optional Concealed Weapons Permit is issued statewide by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Concealed Weapons Permit Unit, not by the county sheriff. Schools, polling places, court facilities, nuclear and hydroelectric stations and posted private property stay off-limits.

Hunting seasons are set by the Arizona Game and Fish Department by game management unit and by draw, not by county. Deer applications and archery-only deer tags are handled by that department, so check its current regulations before you plan a hunt. Hunt dates, unit boundaries, permit numbers and application deadlines change every year, so check the current Arizona Game and Fish regulations and draw schedule for your unit.

Shooting and hunting in Arizona

A few notes for Arizona buyers who shoot or hunt. Each follows the same state rules described above.

  • Shooting near you: the public ranges that Arizona Game and Fish lists as Commission-owned facilities, and posted national forest and BLM land where target shooting is allowed.
  • Deer rifles: Coues whitetail and elk choices, including the calibers most hunters use for the southern units and the northern draws.
  • Waterfowl shotguns: a 12- or 20-gauge setup for duck hunting, plugged to three shells and loaded with non-toxic shot.
  • Javelina: the collared peccary that hunters pursue in the same brush as wild hogs. Arizona has no huntable feral hog population.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to buy a gun near me?

No. Arizona has no permit to purchase and no firearm registration. You show ID, complete Form 4473 and pass a NICS check at the licensed dealer that receives your order.

Is there a waiting period in Arizona?

No. Arizona has no state waiting period, so once the dealer's NICS check comes back as proceed, you can take the firearm home the same day.

Who issues concealed weapons permits in my county?

The Arizona Department of Public Safety issues every Concealed Weapons Permit in the state, so the application does not go through the county sheriff. You still need a fingerprint card and an approved firearms safety course.

How does a gun I order get to me?

Every firearm ships to a licensed dealer near you that you choose at checkout. That dealer runs the background check and transfers the gun to you. Ammunition, optics and most parts ship straight to your door.

Can I carry without a permit where I live?

Yes, if you are 21 or older and not barred from having a firearm. You can carry concealed or openly, but stay out of schools, polling places, court buildings and any private property posted against firearms.
